KPM of KCK Volunteer Overview
The mission of Kolbe Prison Ministries of Kansas City KS is to share the agape love of Jesus Christ with those in prison and to teach the fullness of the truth of the Catholic Church to the incarcerated.
The Kolbe retreats are Catholic in orientation, but open to all faiths. They are organized to teach and show the core beliefs and practices of the Catholic faith. The three-day format includes Eucharistic adoration, Mass, Reconciliation, discussion of Sacraments, witness talks and faith sharing.
We conduct this mission by presenting a retreat within the prison followed by ongoing Catholic formation. Each prison is served by local Catholic volunteers who bring into the prisons training materials, literature and videos with the purpose of educating inmates about the Catholic faith and answering those who have shown an interest in learning more about the Catholic faith after attending a retreat.
Also, after the retreat, we will invite the participants to attend our faith formation classes, Catholic book and Bible Studies, and Sacramental opportunities in our efforts to support and grow the Catholic community within the facility. We also offer OCIA classes for those interested in becoming Catholic.

Volunteer Commitments
-
Most volunteers will be allowed into the facility as a GUEST with a background check based on your driver’s license (No expense to you.). Others may have a KS DOC Mentor or Volunteer badge.
-
We would like you to be present during the entire retreat which is generally from 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM Friday and Saturday and 6:00 AM – 3:00 PM on Sunday.
-
There will be a Commissioning Mass on Thursday evening before the retreat. There is an optional opportunity to help with retreat setup that afternoon.
-
There will be between 4-6 formation meetings held in the weeks prior to the retreat which will be held via Zoom. The goal is to familiarize you with other team members and provide you with specific retreat information.
-
Should you desire local lodging, we suggest you split the cost of a room with another team member. We will coordinate a block of rooms at a nearby hotel.
-
We ask that each volunteer contribute $100 to help defer the costs of the retreat materials, meals and refreshments.
-
Volunteers will wear the same collared color shirts on each day: Red on Friday, Blue on Saturday and Green on Sunday. (Kolbe shirts are available for purchase if desired, but are NOT required.)
